Do you know what the alebrijes really mean in Mexico and what name these strange, colorful and mysterious figures receive in English? If you follow Mexican culture, you will agree with us that there are many typical elements that make this country unmatched.
pedro Linares López’s feverish dream is a fascinating story that explains where this artistic concept came from, which today is an icon followed by many artisans.
Born on June 29, 1906 in Mexico City, Linares and his family were dedicated to the trade of cardboard. They made piñatas, masks and the typical “judas”. The Judas were immense cardboard devils, created to be cremated every Holy Saturday in various parts of Mexico.
The tradition of alebrijes has joined spiritual and deep roots in several regions of Mexico. These curious creatures coexist with the beliefs of Mexican popular mythology that speaks of tonas and nahuals, something very unique in the worldview of pre-Hispanic peoples.
